This Saturday at 18:00, seize the chance to see a reimagining of one of William Shakespeare’s final creations, The Tempest, at the Jan Kochanowski Theatre in Opole!
The plot follows a group of shipwrecked individuals traveling across the Mediterranean Sea. This new interpretation, led by Katarzyna Mińkowska, connects themes of old colonial cravings, proper compensation for former wrongdoings, and the power of acceptance and understanding. At its core, this reinterpretation is also a story about the role and price of art, and how much we can forgive an artist – represented by the main character, demiurge Prospero – who prioritizes the need for creation above all other matters in his life.
According to the theatre staff, The Tempest. Island Regulations is a modern play that, despite its title, includes elements from a few of Shakespeare’s other works – such as Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet. It is a modern dramatic-comedic presentation, featuring a few more lighthearted moments but primarily maintaining a serious tone. This 25th of January 2025 performance is a special treat, as it is one of the few times a local production will be translated into English through subtitles – an exception to the usual format where international audiences often have to wait for foreign troupes to appear as guests.
Don’t miss this chance to discover one of Opole’s leading stages and the talents of the wonderful Polish actors involved in our local theatrical scene. For additional information, photos and ticket sales, visit the English-language site of the venue.
