A Romantic Evening with Japan by Dr Sławomir Kuźnicki

Let’s dive into the shimmering stylings of Japan and discover more about this influential Catford, South London group during a cultural event hosted by Dr Sławomir Kuźnicki from the University of Opole.

This open lecture will celebrate the music and legacy of Japan. The group was one of the most sophisticated and stylistically distinctive bands to emerge from the late 1970s and early 1980s British scene. Rising from glam rock beginnings, the musicians ventured into art pop and early new wave, crafting a unique identity — blending synthesizers, fretless bass, avant-garde textures, and introspective lyricism.

Dr Sławomir Kuźnicki is an author, literary critic, translator, and lecturer at the University of Opole. His scholarly work focuses on the intersections of literature and music, particularly rock culture and its broader cultural contexts. Throughout his career, he has published monographs on dystopian fiction and literary perspectives on rock music.

The event will be hosted on 19 February 2026 at 5:45 PM at Kośnego 34 in Opole, thanks to efforts of the Foreign Language Library of the Opole Voivodeship Public Library (Biblioteka Obcojęzyczna WBP Opole) in cooperation with the University of Opole.
