A famous amphibian once sang “It’s not that easy being green”, but is that really true? These students are looking to change the local outlook on the topic, by launching the GreenOpole movement.
This final course project (officially called in Polish “ZieloneOpole”) prepared for “Sustainable Development”, conducted by Dr. Bartosz Maziarz, will run from today until June 16. The goal of it is to promote green spaces and the idea of well-being in the city. The group wants to encourage residents to make use of the existing parks and green zones, while emphasizing Opole’s potential for creating new such spaces.
“Our main goal is to draw the attention of both residents and city authorities to the importance of greenery in urban areas, showing that it affects not only the aesthetics of the city, but above all the health, quality of life, and everyday functioning of its inhabitants. (…) We aim to show that not every modern space has to be based on concrete and that urban development can go hand in hand with nature. Our campaign also seeks to remind people of unrealized plans regarding the creation of green areas, including those planned for Copernicus Square, which is why it was chosen as the location for our conference.” – said Olga Weideman during the media briefing.
The campaign, hoping to raise public awareness, will be carried out mainly through social media and at the University of Opole, also collaborating with the City Hall. We are very thankful for the opportunity to take part in the launch, and are looking forward to see what the coming weeks will bring.
