The “Countertops Full of Quarters: The Arcade Industry and Culture in Poland and Around the World” course (May 7, 2:00 PM)
What did arcades look like around the world, and what were the realities in Poland? Which games were more popular here than in other countries? Why do batteries still give their owners nightmares? What is JAMMA?
During the presentation, we will travel back to a time when pubs echoed with the sound of metal pinballs, the Zilog Z80 began to rule the world, and the first arcade machines appeared on our local market. Then, moving closer to the present day, we will look at the most important topics that shaped this unique branch of entertainment over the years, both in Poland and around the world.

for the following weeks, an arcade machine with a regularly changing selection of games will be available at the library. The frequent rotation of titles means that new challenges will be waiting for you regularly, including classics from series such as Metal Slug, Mortal Kombat, and Tekken. Thanks to the leaderboards on OPOlink.pl/ArcaDive, you will be able to compete and improve your best scores. The site will also soon feature a schedule of machine availability prepared on the basis of the results of a survey linked here.
The event is organized by the Random Encounter Student Sciencr Club of the University of Opole and OPOlink.pl, serving as a part of the celebration of two years since the portal’s launch. The event is held in cooperation with the Game Studies programme at the University of Opole and the Gaming Zone of the Provincial Public Library in Opole.
We invite everyone interested in discovering, whether again or for the first time, the fascinating world of this classic form of entertainment.
